Registration is now closed for the 2018 PCRRHS Convention, which will be in Cleveland, Ohio, on September 20-22. The convention will be held at the Holiday Inn South Cleveland in Independence, conveniently located just a few minutes' drive south of downtown Cleveland. We have a special room rate of $99.00 per night. If you have registered for the convention but not yet reserved your hotel room, do so immediately by calling (216) 524-8050.
Thursday, September 20
The convention begins Thursday afternoon with time to socialize along with setting up models, displays, and sale items in the meeting room. After a break for dinner, there will be slide shows by local photographer Terry Kolenc, followed by open projector time for members to share their slides.
Friday, September 21
The annual business meeting will be held Friday morning. The afternoon will include a tour of Charter Steel, a mill with an electric melt shop that produces carbon and alloy steel wire products located in nearby Cuyahoga Heights. In the afternoon we will tour Norfolk Southern's Macedonia Car Shop, located next to Motor Yard in Macedonia. Please note that long pants and sturdy hard-soled shoes will be required for both tours. No open-toed shoes, sneakers, or shorts will be permitted!
Friday evening will feature a presentation by Shel Lustig and Dan Maners called “Towers on the Penn Central” looking at interlocking towers around the PC system, followed by a presentation by Dale DeVene about his time working as a tower operator under PC.
Saturday, September 22
Saturday morning we will visit the Midwest Railway Preservation Society’s facility in downtown Cleveland, located in a former Baltimore & Ohio roundhouse. The roundhouse currently houses two steam locomotives: former Grand Trunk Western 2-8-2 4070 and former Reading T1 4-8-4 2100, both of which are undergoing restoration by two different organizations.
Saturday afternoon we will have an optional ride on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad behind Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 #765. Tickets for the steam train are available now and can be purchased online or by calling 1-800-468-4070. Ticket prices are expected to be $40.
For those who do not wish to ride, you will have the afternoon free for railfanning or other activities.
Saturday evening will be the annual convention banquet. Our convention speaker will be Greg Comstock, Northern Region General Manager for Norfolk Southern. Greg will speak about his career with the Penn Central.
